Fountains can provide much needed relief on hot days by filling the air with moisture. They are stunning and amazing to look at. They provide a soothing sound for relaxing. Fountains can provide some white noise helping to block out unwanted surrounding noise.

It has been proven that waterfalls and water fountains release negative ions. These ions attach themselves to particles, dust and pollutants thus improving air quality. High concentration of negative ions are essential for high energy and positive moods, making a waterfall or fountain the ideal choice for an area to rest and recharge at the end of the day.

A good rule of thumb is to use a large fountain as a focal point and a small fountain as an accent element. For landscaping, there are two different types of water fountains:

  • Floor Fountains
  • Wall Fountains
  • Floor Fountains

As the name suggests, floor fountains are placed upon the floor, deck, ground or bottom of your pond. These kind of fountains are generally very decorative and create a wonderful sound as the water falls. They can be made of stone or other materials such as molded fiberglass ro from cast alabastrite.

Floor fountains are made to be very durable and last years and years. To make the fountain a focal point, you will want to choose a multi-tiered model

Wall fountains are what the name implies, fountains that are mounted on a wall. This can be an outside brick wall on your deck, the wall of your house where it meets the deck, or on an interior wall of your house.

Wall fountains are generally smaller but that doesn't mean they can't be as striking as other fountains. Coupled with lighting, wall fountains can make a dramatic statement and become a focal point in your landscaping.

    Fountain Materials

Fountains can be made out of a number of materials. You will want to carefully choose the material your fountain is made out of. The color, durability and texture of the materials affect how well your fountain will blend in with your landscaping or outside areas.

The materials fountains can be made of are stone, natural rocks, concrete, PVC, steel, cast iron/wrought iron and marble. The most popular materials used for outdoor fountains are concrete and ceramic because they look good and last long.

Don't forget the lighting. You will want the same fountain that is the focal point of your landscaping to be the focal point of your landscaping at night. White or colored lights can achieve different effects when viewing your fountain at night.

Fountain lights can highlight different features of your fountain. Do you want to highlight the splashing water? Do you want to highlight the surrounding landscaping?

If you enjoy throwing parties, making the lighting of your fountain colored can turn your fountain into a light show for your party guests.
